Honey Secretary’s Report and results

The 2017 Branch Honey Show was held at St Ann’s Millenium Centre, View Road, Rainhill on Saturday, 4th November, 2017. It was an excellent venue with good facilities for both the Honey Show and the AGM.

The Show was well supported, although a number of entries came in after the closing date (including one from someone who should know better, who had had a problem with his heating and would not be entering!).

I did accept the late entries, but it tends to cause problems with the issuing of exhibitor numbers. So I would, please, ask our members to comply with the closing date. It is there for a reason. It gives the Honey Show Secretary time to eliminate any minor mistakes in the numbering of entries.

I would also reiterate the comments by our judge, Steve Guest, re: replacing lids in the show room. This should be done in a dust free environment a day or more before the show as it will allow the aroma to build up and prevent specks on the honey which would disqualify it.

The total number of exhibits entered was 76 by 16 exhibitors. Since there were fewer than one hundred exhibits, we were unable to award the Blue Ribbon, which gives free entry into the National Honey Show. Best exhibit received a Certificate of Merit.

Overall, the Show went very well. The judge’s comments were encouraging, to the extent that some of the first prize entries would have held their own at the National Honey Show. Another request was to split the Mead into a sweet and a dry class, which we can look at for next year’s show.

The judging was completed early, giving the members plenty of time to look at the results. Unfortunately, someone removed two jars of medium honey which belonged to another exhibitor. Hopefully this mistake will be rectified, and we need to be careful that we remove only our own exhibits. Any queries can be taken to the Honey Show Secretary to check his records.

The Judge was thanked, and members were thanked for their support. The steward, Dave Harrison, and the card writer/record keeper, Sheila Myron, were thanked for their services and the Show closed at 1700 hours.
